NDA 1 2025 Maths, question 37

Topic: Trigonometry

Passage · Q36 to Q38

The sides of a triangle ABCABC are AB=3AB = 3 cm, BC=5BC = 5 cm and CA=7CA = 7 cm.

Q37

What is ∠B\angle B equal to?

  1. (a) 60∘60^{\circ}
  2. (b) 105∘105^{\circ}
  3. (c) 120∘120^{\circ}Correct answer
  4. (d) 150∘150^{\circ}

Solution.

Answer: (c) 120∘120^{\circ}

  1. At BB, the adjacent sides are AB=3AB = 3 and BC=5BC = 5, and the opposite side is AC=7AC = 7.
  2. By the cosine rule, cos⁡B=32+52−722⋅3⋅5=−12\cos B = \frac{3^{2} + 5^{2} - 7^{2}}{2 \cdot 3 \cdot 5} = - \frac{1}{2}.
  3. As 0∘<B<180∘0^{\circ} < B < 180^{\circ}, this gives B=120∘B = 120^{\circ}.
