Topic: Matrices and determinants

Q27

If A=[122212221]A = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & 2 & 2 \\ 2 & 1 & 2 \\ 2 & 2 & 1 \end{bmatrix}, then what is A2−4AA^{2} - 4A equal to? where I3I_{3} is the identity matrix of order 3.

  1. (a) −5I3- 5I_{3}
  2. (b) −I3- I_{3}
  3. (c) I3I_{3}
  4. (d) 5I35I_{3}Correct answer

Solution.

Answer: (d) 5I35I_{3}

  1. Each diagonal entry of A2A^{2} is 12+22+22=91^{2} + 2^{2} + 2^{2} = 9.
  2. Each off-diagonal entry is 1×2+2×1+2×2=81 \times 2 + 2 \times 1 + 2 \times 2 = 8.
  3. Subtracting 4A4A leaves diagonal entries 9−4=59 - 4 = 5 and off-diagonal entries 8−8=08 - 8 = 0.
  4. Hence A2−4A=5I3A^{2} - 4A = 5I_{3}.
