Topic: Matrices and determinants

Q12

If ω\omega is a non-real cube root of unity, then what is a root of the following equation? ∣x+1ωω2ωx+ω21ω21x+ω∣=0\left| \begin{matrix} x + 1 & \omega & \omega^{2} \\ \omega & x + \omega^{2} & 1 \\ \omega^{2} & 1 & x + \omega \end{matrix} \right| = 0

  1. (a) x=0x = 0Correct answer
  2. (b) x=1x = 1
  3. (c) x=ωx = \omega
  4. (d) x=ω2x = \omega^{2}

Solution.

Answer: (a) x=0x = 0

  1. Try x=0x = 0.
  2. The first row becomes (1,ω,ω2)\left( 1,\omega,\omega^{2} \right).
  3. Using ω3=1\omega^{3} = 1, the second row is ω\omega times the first, and the third is ω2\omega^{2} times the first.
  4. The rows are proportional, so the determinant is zero.
  5. Therefore x=0x = 0 is a root.
