Topic: Probability

Q117

If two fair dice are tossed, then what is the probability that the sum of the numbers on the faces of the dice is strictly greater than 7?

  1. (a) 1/3
  2. (b) 5/12Correct answer
  3. (c) 7/12
  4. (d) 3/4

Solution.

Answer: (b) 5/12

  1. The 36 ordered outcomes are equally likely.
  2. Sums 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 have respectively 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 outcomes.
  3. The probability is (5+4+3+2+1)/36=15/36=5/12(5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1)/36 = 15/36 = 5/12.
