NDA 1 2025 Maths, question 107

Topic: Probability

Passage · Q107 to Q108

Let XX be a random variable following binomial distribution with parameters n=6n = 6 and p=kp = k. Further, 9P(X=4)=P(X=2)9P(X = 4) = P(X = 2).

Q107

What is the value of kk?

  1. (a) 1/2
  2. (b) 1/3
  3. (c) 1/4Correct answer
  4. (d) 1/5

Solution.

Answer: (c) 1/4

  1. 9(64)k4(1−k)2=(62)k2(1−k)49\binom{6}{4}k^{4}(1 - k)^{2} = \binom{6}{2}k^{2}(1 - k)^{4}, and (64)=(62)=15\binom{6}{4} = \binom{6}{2} = 15.
  2. Cancel the common factors (with 0<k<10 < k < 1): 9k2=(1−k)29k^{2} = (1 - k)^{2}, so 3k=1−k3k = 1 - k.
  3. k=1/4k = 1/4.

Trap: k=0k = 0 and k=1k = 1 also make both sides zero, but a binomial probability is taken strictly between 0 and 1.
