NDA 2 2024 Maths, question 94

Topic: Integral calculus

Passage · Q93 to Q94

Let f(t)=ln⁡(t+1+t2)f(t)=\ln \left( t+\sqrt{1+t^{2}} \right) and g(t)=tan⁡(f(t))g(t)=\tan (f(t)).

Q94

What is ∫−ππg(t)dt\int _{-\pi}^{\pi}g(t) dt equal to?

  1. (a) −1-1
  2. (b) 00Correct answer
  3. (c) 1/21/2
  4. (d) 11

Solution.

Answer: (b) 00

  1. f(−t)=ln⁡(−t+1+t2)=−f(t)f(-t) = \ln\left(-t + \sqrt{1 + t^{2}}\right) = -f(t), so ff is odd, and so is g(t)=tan⁡(f(t))g(t) = \tan(f(t)).
  2. The integral of an odd function over [−π,π][-\pi, \pi] is 0.

Trap: gg has breaks where f(t)=±π2f(t) = \pm\frac{\pi}{2}, inside the interval, so strictly the integral does not exist; the expected answer uses the odd-function rule.
