Topic: Matrices and determinants

Q5

Let AA and BB be two square matrices of same order. If ABAB is a null matrix, then which one of the following is correct?

  1. (a) Both AA and BB are null matrices
  2. (b) Either AA or BB is a null matrix
  3. (c) BB is a null matrix if AA is a non-singular matrixCorrect answer
  4. (d) Both AA and BB are singular matrices

Solution.

Answer: (c) BB is a null matrix if AA is a non-singular matrix

  1. If A is nonsingular, multiply AB=0 by A⁻¹ on the left to obtain B=0.
  2. Nonzero singular matrices can multiply to zero: diag(1,0)diag(0,1)=0.
  3. Also A=I and B=0 disproves the claim that both must be singular.
