Topic: Algebra

Passage · Q43 to Q44

The product of 55 consecutive terms of an AP is 229635229635. The first, second and fifth terms are in GP.

Q43

What is the common difference?

  1. (a) 33
  2. (b) 44
  3. (c) 55
  4. (d) 66Correct answer

Solution.

Answer: (d) 66

  1. Let the terms be a,a+d,a+2d,a+3d,a+4da, a + d, a + 2d, a + 3d, a + 4d. The GP condition (a+d)2=a(a+4d)(a + d)^{2} = a(a + 4d) gives d(d−2a)=0d(d - 2a) = 0, so d=2ad = 2a.
  2. The terms are a,3a,5a,7a,9aa, 3a, 5a, 7a, 9a with product 945a5=229635945a^{5} = 229635, so a5=243a^{5} = 243 and a=3a = 3.
  3. So d=2a=6d = 2a = 6.

Trap: d=0d = 0 also satisfies the GP condition, but then all five terms are equal and 0 is not an option; the question means a non-constant AP.
