Topic: Algebra

Q34

Let PP and QQ be two non-void relations on a set AA. Which of the following statements are correct?

I. PP and QQ are reflexive ⇒P∩Q⇒P\cap Q is reflexive.

II. PP and QQ are symmetric ⇒P∪Q⇒P\cup Q is symmetric.

III. PP and QQ are transitive ⇒P∩Q⇒P\cap Q is transitive.

Select the answer using the code given below.

  1. (a) I and II only
  2. (b) II and III only
  3. (c) I and III only
  4. (d) I, II and IIICorrect answer

Solution.

Answer: (d) I, II and III

  1. Every diagonal pair (a,a) belongs to both reflexive relations, so their intersection is reflexive.
  2. If a pair is in the union of symmetric relations, its reverse is in the same relation and thus in the union.
  3. If two composable pairs belong to the intersection of transitive relations, their implied pair belongs to both.
  4. All three statements follow.
