Topic: Matrices and determinants

Q12

If

ω=−12+i32\omega=-\frac{1}{2}+i\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}

then what is

∣1+ω1+ω2ω+ω21ωω21ω1ω21∣\left| \begin{matrix} 1+\omega & 1+\omega^{2} & \omega+\omega^{2} \\ 1 & \omega & \omega^{2} \\ \frac{1}{\omega} & \frac{1}{\omega^{2}} & 1 \end{matrix} \right|

equal to?

  1. (a) 00Correct answer
  2. (b) ω\omega
  3. (c) ω2\omega^{2}
  4. (d) 1−ω21-\omega^{2}

Solution.

Answer: (a) 00

  1. Since ω³=1, 1/ω=ω² and 1/ω²=ω.
  2. The first row is (−ω²,−ω,−1), the negative of the third row.
  3. Two proportional rows make the determinant zero.
