Q119

Three perfect dice D1,D2D_{1},D_{2} and D3D_{3} are rolled. Let x,yx,y and zz represent the numbers on D1,D2D_{1},D_{2} and D3D_{3} respectively. What is the number of possible outcomes such that x<y<zx<y<z?

  1. (a) 2020Correct answer
  2. (b) 1818
  3. (c) 1414
  4. (d) 1010

Solution.

Answer: (a) 2020

  1. Choose any three distinct values from 1,…,6.
  2. Each such set has exactly one ordering satisfying x<y<z.
  3. Hence there are C(6,3)=20 outcomes; multiplying by 3! would count forbidden orderings.
