Topic: Probability

Q114

Urn AA contains 22 white and 22 black balls while urn BB contains 33 white and 22 black balls. One ball is transferred from urn AA to urn BB and then a ball is drawn out of urn BB. What is the probability that the ball is white?

  1. (a) 11/2011/20
  2. (b) 7/127/12Correct answer
  3. (c) 3/53/5
  4. (d) 11

Solution.

Answer: (b) 7/127/12

  1. A white or black transfer from A each has probability 1/2.
  2. After a white transfer B has 4 white out of 6; after a black transfer it has 3 out of 6.
  3. Total probability of white is (1/2)(4/6)+(1/2)(3/6)=7/12.
