NDA 2 2024 Maths, question 107

Topic: Probability

Q107

AA can hit a target 55 times in 66 shots, BB can hit 44 times in 55 shots and CC can hit 33 times in 44 shots. What is the probability that AA and CC may hit but BB may lose?

  1. (a) 1/81/8Correct answer
  2. (b) 1/61/6
  3. (c) 1/41/4
  4. (d) 1/31/3

Solution.

Answer: (a) 1/81/8

  1. P(A hits)=56P(A \text{ hits}) = \frac{5}{6}, P(B misses)=1−45=15P(B \text{ misses}) = 1 - \frac{4}{5} = \frac{1}{5}, P(C hits)=34P(C \text{ hits}) = \frac{3}{4}.
  2. Multiply: 56×15×34=15120=18\frac{5}{6} \times \frac{1}{5} \times \frac{3}{4} = \frac{15}{120} = \frac{1}{8}.

Trap: Multiplying assumes the three shoot independently, which the question takes for granted.
