Topic: Differential calculus

Q80

Which one of the following is correct in respect of f(x)=1∣x∣−xf(x)=\frac{1}{\sqrt{|x|-x}} and g(x)=1x−∣x∣g(x)=\frac{1}{\sqrt{x-|x|}} ?

  1. (a) f(x)f(x) has some domain and g(x)g(x) has no domainCorrect answer
  2. (b) f(x)f(x) has no domain and g(x)g(x) has some domain
  3. (c) f(x)f(x) and g(x)g(x) have the same domain
  4. (d) f(x)f(x) and g(x)g(x) do not have any domain

Solution.

Answer: (a) f(x)f(x) has some domain and g(x)g(x) has no domain

  1. For f, the radicand must be strictly positive because it is in a denominator.
  2. When x < 0, |x| − x = −2x > 0, so its domain is (−∞, 0).
  3. But x − |x| is never positive, so g has no real domain.
