Q8

If −2-\sqrt{2} and 3\sqrt{3} are roots of the equation a0+a1x+a2x2+a3x3+x4=0a_{0}+a_{1}x+a_{2}x^{2}+a_{3}x^{3}+x^{4}=0 where a0,a1,a2,a3a_{0},a_{1},a_{2},a_{3} are integers, then which one of the following is correct ?

  1. (a) a2=a3=0a_{2}=a_{3}=0
  2. (b) a2=0 and a3=−5a_{2}=0\text{ and }a_{3}=-5
  3. (c) a0=6,a3=0a_{0}=6,a_{3}=0Correct answer
  4. (d) a1=0 and a2=5a_{1}=0\text{ and }a_{2}=5

Solution.

Answer: (c) a0=6,a3=0a_{0}=6,a_{3}=0

  1. Integer coefficients require the conjugate irrational roots √2 and −√3 as well.
  2. The monic quartic is therefore (x²−2)(x²−3)=x⁴−5x²+6.
  3. Thus a₀=6, a₁=a₃=0 and a₂=−5, matching (c).
