Topic: Vectors

Q70

Let a→\overrightarrow{a} and b→\overrightarrow{b} are two vectors of magnitude 44 inclined at an angle π3\frac{\pi}{3}, then what is the angle between a→\overrightarrow{a} and a→−b→\overrightarrow{a}-\overrightarrow{b} ?

  1. (a) π2\frac{\pi}{2}
  2. (b) π3\frac{\pi}{3}Correct answer
  3. (c) π4\frac{\pi}{4}
  4. (d) π6\frac{\pi}{6}

Solution.

Answer: (b) π3\frac{\pi}{3}

  1. The data give |a − b| = 4 and a·(a − b) = |a|² − a·b = 16 − 8 = 8.
  2. Therefore the cosine of the angle between a and a − b is 8/(4 × 4) = 1/2, so the angle is π/3.
