Topic: Analytical geometry

Q61

If two sides of a square lie on the lines 2x+y−3=02x+y-3=0 and 4x+2y+5=04x+2y+5=0, then what is the area of the square in square units ?

  1. (a) 6.056.05Correct answer
  2. (b) 6.156.15
  3. (c) 6.256.25
  4. (d) 6.356.35

Solution.

Answer: (a) 6.056.05

  1. Write the parallel lines with identical x- and y-coefficients as 2x + y − 3 = 0 and 2x + y + 5/2 = 0.
  2. Their separation is (11/2)/√5; its square is 121/20 = 6.05.
