CTET 8 Feb 2026 Paper 1 English, Question 103

Topic: Poem comprehension

Passage

Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow : (100-105)
Put away the road maps now.
To go there,
you do not need
helicopters any more;
wherever there is hunger,
there Kalahandi is.

The god of rain
turned away his face.
There was not one green leaf
left on the trees for supper.
The whole village a graveyard.
Cracked ground,
drab river sand.
All the plans failed;
the poverty line
receded further.

Q103

Kalahandi as described in the poem stands for :

  1. (1) prosperity
  2. (2) hungerCorrect answer
  3. (3) natural disasters
  4. (4) development

Solution.

CBSE answer: (2)

Answer: (2) hunger

  1. The poet says, "wherever there is hunger, there Kalahandi is."
  2. So Kalahandi is no longer just a place on a map; it stands for hunger anywhere.
  3. That is why we do not need road maps or helicopters to reach it.

Trap: (3) drought causes the hunger, but the poem names hunger as what Kalahandi means.
