Passage

Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow : (100-105)
Put away the road maps now.
To go there,
you do not need
helicopters any more;
wherever there is hunger,
there Kalahandi is.

The god of rain
turned away his face.
There was not one green leaf
left on the trees for supper.
The whole village a graveyard.
Cracked ground,
drab river sand.
All the plans failed;
the poverty line
receded further.

  1. (1) alliteration
  2. (2) personificationCorrect answer
  3. (3) oxymoron
  4. (4) transferred epithet

Solution.

CBSE answer: (2)

Answer: (2) personification

  1. Rain is given a human body and a human action: it has a face and turns it away.
  2. Giving human qualities to something non-human is personification.
  3. There are no repeated starting sounds (alliteration) and no pair of opposite words (oxymoron).

Trap: (4) a transferred epithet shifts an adjective to the wrong noun, which does not happen here.
