Topic: Arithmetic

Q8

The weight of XX, in kg, is denoted by XX. The weights of A,B,C,D,P,Q,RA,B,C,D,P,Q,R and SS are measured. Given :

A+B+C+D=17A+B+C+D=17

A+C=6A+C=6

P+Q+S+D=15P+Q+S+D=15

P+Q+R+B=17P+Q+R+B=17

P=RP=R and Q=SQ=S

Which one of the following statements is correct?

  1. (a) BB and DD together weigh less than the total weight of PP and QQ.
  2. (b) PP and QQ together weigh more than the total weight of AA and CC.Correct answer
  3. (c) PP weighs more than QQ.
  4. (d) QQ weighs more than PP.

Solution.

Answer: (b) PP and QQ together weigh more than the total weight of AA and CC.

  1. From A+B+C+D=17A + B + C + D = 17 and A+C=6A + C = 6, we get B+D=17−6=11B + D = 17 - 6 = 11.
  2. Adding P+Q+S+D=15P + Q + S + D = 15 and P+Q+R+B=17P + Q + R + B = 17 with R=PR = P and S=QS = Q gives 3(P+Q)+(B+D)=323(P + Q) + (B + D) = 32, so 3(P+Q)=32−11=213(P + Q) = 32 - 11 = 21 and P+Q=7P + Q = 7.
  3. Since P+Q=7P + Q = 7 and A+C=6A + C = 6, PP and QQ together weigh more than the total weight of AA and CC.
