A person saves 10% of his salary every month. If his salary increases by 12% and the expenditure increases by 10%, then what will be the change in his saving per month?

  1. (a) 20% increase
  2. (b) 30% increaseCorrect answer
  3. (c) 03% decrease
  4. (d) 02% decrease

Solution.

Answer: (b) 30% increase

  1. Let the initial monthly salary be 100100; since the person saves 10%10\%, initial saving is 1010 and initial expenditure is 9090.
  2. After a 12%12\% increase in salary and a 10%10\% increase in expenditure, the new salary is 112112 and the new expenditure is 90×1.10=9990 \times 1.10 = 99.
  3. The new saving is 112−99=13112 - 99 = 13, which is an increase of 13−1010×100%=30%\frac{13 - 10}{10} \times 100\% = 30\%.
