Topic: Arrangements and puzzles

Q33

P,Q,R,SP,Q,R,S and TT are ranked 1 to 5 (not necessarily in that order). The rank of PP is 4, the rank of QQ is not 5, the rank of RR is 1, the rank of SS is not 2, the rank of TT is not 3. Then which of the following is/are correct?

I. If the rank of SS is 3, then that of TT is 2.

II. If the rank of QQ is 3, then that of TT is 5.

Select the answer using the code given below.

  1. (a) I only
  2. (b) II only
  3. (c) Both I and II
  4. (d) Neither I nor IICorrect answer

Solution.

Answer: (d) Neither I nor II

  1. Since the rank of RR is 11 and the rank of PP is 44, the remaining ranks for Q,S,Q, S, and TT are {2,3,5}\{2, 3, 5\} subject to Q≠5Q \ne 5, S≠2S \ne 2, and T≠3T \ne 3.
  2. Statement I is incorrect: if S=3S = 3, the remaining ranks for QQ and TT are {2,5}\{2, 5\}; since Q≠5Q \ne 5, we must have Q=2Q = 2 and T=5T = 5 (not 22).
  3. Statement II is incorrect: if Q=3Q = 3, the remaining ranks for SS and TT are {2,5}\{2, 5\}; since S≠2S \ne 2, we must have S=5S = 5 and T=2T = 2 (not 55).
