Q20

The speed of a train TT is 100 km per hour and the speed of a person PP is 4 km per hour. TT crosses PP in 15 seconds, if PP travels along the direction of motion of TT. If PP travels along the opposite direction of TT, then in how much time does TT cross PP, in seconds, approximately?

  1. (a) 13.5113.51
  2. (b) 13.6513.65
  3. (c) 13.8513.85Correct answer
  4. (d) 14.0514.05

Solution.

Answer: (c) 13.8513.85

  1. When PP moves in the same direction as train TT, their relative speed is 100−4=96100 - 4 = 96 km/h; when PP moves in the opposite direction, their relative speed is 100+4=104100 + 4 = 104 km/h.
  2. Since the length of the train is constant, the crossing time in the opposite direction is 15×96104=18013≈13.8515 \times \frac{96}{104} = \frac{180}{13} \approx 13.85 seconds.
