Q1

Question : XX receives three coins of different denominations : 1,2,5,101,2,5,10 and 2020. If the total amount received by XX is mm, does XX receive a coin of denomination 55?

Statement I : mm is not a prime number.

Statement II : The sum of the digits of mm is greater than 55.

  1. (a) Select this option if the question can be answered using one of these statements alone, but cannot be answered using other statementCorrect answer
  2. (b) Select this option if the question can be answered using either statement alone
  3. (c) Select this option if the question can be answered using both the statements together, but cannot be answered using either statement alone
  4. (d) Select this option if the question cannot be answered even using any of the statements

Solution.

Answer: (a) Select this option if the question can be answered using one of these statements alone, but cannot be answered using other statement

  1. The 10 possible three-coin sums mm from {1,2,5,10,20}\{1, 2, 5, 10, 20\} are 8,16,17,26,27,358, 16, 17, 26, 27, 35 (which include coin 55) and 13,23,31,3213, 23, 31, 32 (which exclude coin 55).
  2. Statement I alone is not sufficient: if mm is not prime, mm can be 8=1+2+58 = 1+2+5 (includes 55) or 32=2+10+2032 = 2+10+20 (excludes 55).
  3. Statement II alone is sufficient: the digit sums for the four combinations without coin 55 are 4,5,4,54, 5, 4, 5 (all at most 55), whereas every combination with coin 55 has digit sum 7,8,7, 8, or 99 (strictly greater than 55).

Trap: Check 2+10+20=322 + 10 + 20 = 32 under Statement I: 3232 is composite but does not use coin 55, so Statement I alone fails.
