Topic: Number system

Q80

The difference between any two natural numbers is 10. What can be said about the natural numbers which are divisible by 5 and lie between these two numbers ?

  1. (a) There is only one such number.
  2. (b) There are only two such numbers.
  3. (c) There can be more than one such number.Correct answer
  4. (d) No such number exists.

Solution.

Answer: (c) There can be more than one such number.

  1. Let the two natural numbers with difference 1010 be aa and a+10a + 10.
  2. If aa is a multiple of 55 (for example, 55 and 1515), there is exactly 11 multiple of 55 strictly between them (1010); if aa is not a multiple of 55 (for example, 66 and 1616), there are 22 multiples of 55 strictly between them (1010 and 1515).
  3. Therefore, there is always at least one and there can be more than one such number.
