UPSC Prelims 2025 CSAT, question 78

Topic: Arithmetic

Q78

The average of three numbers p,qp,q and rr is kk. pp is as much more than the average as qq is less than the average. What is the value of rr ?

  1. (a) kkCorrect answer
  2. (b) k−1k-1
  3. (c) k+1k+1
  4. (d) k/2k/2

Solution.

Answer: (a) kk

  1. Since the average of p,q,p, q, and rr is kk, we have p+q+r=3kp + q + r = 3k.
  2. The condition that pp exceeds kk by the same amount that qq is less than kk gives p−k=k−q⇒p+q=2kp - k = k - q \Rightarrow p + q = 2k.
  3. Substituting p+q=2kp + q = 2k into p+q+r=3kp + q + r = 3k gives r=3k−2k=kr = 3k - 2k = k.
