UPSC Prelims 2025 CSAT, question 7

Topic: Number system

Q7

How many possible values of (p+q+r)(p+q+r) are there satisfying 1p+1q+1r=1\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{q}+\frac{1}{r}=1, where p,qp,q and rr are natural numbers (not necessarily distinct) ?

  1. (a) None
  2. (b) One
  3. (c) ThreeCorrect answer
  4. (d) More than three

Solution.

Answer: (c) Three

  1. Assume without loss of generality that 1<p≤q≤r1 < p \le q \le r; since 1p+1q+1r=1≤3p\frac{1}{p} + \frac{1}{q} + \frac{1}{r} = 1 \le \frac{3}{p}, we must have p∈{2,3}p \in \{2, 3\}.
  2. For p=3p = 3, the only solution with 3≤q≤r3 \le q \le r is (3,3,3)(3, 3, 3), giving p+q+r=9p + q + r = 9.
  3. For p=2p = 2, we need 1q+1r=12\frac{1}{q} + \frac{1}{r} = \frac{1}{2}, which gives (q−2)(r−2)=4(q - 2)(r - 2) = 4; the solutions are (2,4,4)(2, 4, 4) with sum 1010 and (2,3,6)(2, 3, 6) with sum 1111, yielding 33 possible values (9,10,9, 10, and 1111).
