Topic: Number system

Q67

What is the remainder when 93+94+95+96+⋯+91009^3+9^4+9^5+9^6+\dots +9^{100} is divided by 6 ?

  1. (a) 0Correct answer
  2. (b) 1
  3. (c) 2
  4. (d) 3

Solution.

Answer: (a) 0

  1. For every positive integer k≥1k \ge 1, 9k9^k is an odd multiple of 33, so 9k≡3(mod6)9^k \equiv 3 \pmod{6}.
  2. The sum 93+94+⋯+91009^3 + 9^4 + \dots + 9^{100} contains 100−3+1=98100 - 3 + 1 = 98 terms, each congruent to 3(mod6)3 \pmod{6}.
  3. Since 9898 is even, 98×3=29498 \times 3 = 294 is a multiple of 66, so the remainder is 00.
