Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

  1. (a) I only
  2. (b) II only
  3. (c) Both I and IICorrect answer
  4. (d) Neither I nor II

Solution.

Answer: (c) Both I and II

  1. In a 3-team round-robin (33 matches: PP-QQ, PP-RR, QQ-RR) where each team scores exactly 11 goal: PP has 33 points (11 win, 11 draw, 00 losses) and RR has 11 point (00 wins, 11 draw, 11 loss); since total wins equal total losses (11 win and 11 loss overall), QQ's 22 points must come from 22 draws (00 wins, 22 draws, 00 losses).
  2. Statement I is correct: since QQ drew both its matches, PP's win was against RR (11-00, using PP's only goal) and PP drew with QQ; since PP had 00 goals left for the PP-QQ match, the PP-QQ draw must have been 00-00.
  3. Statement II is correct: since QQ-RR was a draw and both QQ and RR scored 00 goals in their matches against PP, both QQ and RR must have scored their 11 tournament goal against each other in a 11-11 draw.
