UPSC Prelims 2025 CSAT, question 5

Topic: Number system

Q5

A natural number NN is such that it can be expressed as N=p+q+rN=p+q+r, where p,qp,q and rr are distinct factors of NN. How many numbers below 50 have this property ?

  1. (a) 6
  2. (b) 7
  3. (c) 8Correct answer
  4. (d) 9

Solution.

Answer: (c) 8

  1. Dividing N=p+q+rN = p + q + r by NN gives pN+qN+rN=1\frac{p}{N} + \frac{q}{N} + \frac{r}{N} = 1, or 1a+1b+1c=1\frac{1}{a} + \frac{1}{b} + \frac{1}{c} = 1, where a=Np,b=Nq,c=Nra = \frac{N}{p}, b = \frac{N}{q}, c = \frac{N}{r} are distinct positive divisors of NN greater than 11.
  2. The only set of three distinct integers greater than 11 whose reciprocals sum to 11 is {2,3,6}\{2, 3, 6\} (since 12+13+16=1\frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{3} + \frac{1}{6} = 1), so NN has this property if and only if NN is a multiple of 66 (with p=N2,q=N3,r=N6p = \frac{N}{2}, q = \frac{N}{3}, r = \frac{N}{6}).
  3. The multiples of 66 below 5050 are 6,12,18,24,30,36,42,6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, and 4848, which gives 88 numbers.
