UPSC Prelims 2025 CSAT, question 46

Topic: Number system

Q46

If nn is a natural number, then what is the number of distinct remainders of (1n+2n)(1^n+2^n) when divided by 4 ?

  1. (a) 0
  2. (b) 1
  3. (c) 2Correct answer
  4. (d) 3

Solution.

Answer: (c) 2

  1. For n=1n = 1, 11+21=31^1 + 2^1 = 3, which leaves a remainder of 33 when divided by 44.
  2. For every integer n≥2n \ge 2, 2n=4×2n−22^n = 4 \times 2^{n-2} is divisible by 44, so 1n+2n=1+2n≡1(mod4)1^n + 2^n = 1 + 2^n \equiv 1 \pmod{4}.
  3. Therefore, the only possible remainders are 33 and 11, giving 22 distinct remainders.
