Topic: Number system

Q35

What is the maximum value of nn such that 7×343×385×1000×2401×777777 \times 343 \times 385 \times 1000 \times 2401 \times 77777 is divisible by 35n35^n ?

  1. (a) 3
  2. (b) 4Correct answer
  3. (c) 5
  4. (d) 7

Solution.

Answer: (b) 4

  1. Since 35=5×735 = 5 \times 7, the highest power 35n35^n dividing the product is min⁡(v5,v7)\min(v_5, v_7), where v5v_5 and v7v_7 are the exponents of 55 and 77 in the prime factorization.
  2. Counting factors of 55: 385=5×7×11385 = 5 \times 7 \times 11 contributes 515^1 and 1000=23×531000 = 2^3 \times 5^3 contributes 535^3, while 7,343,2401,7, 343, 2401, and 7777777777 have no factor of 55, giving v5=1+3=4v_5 = 1 + 3 = 4.
  3. Counting factors of 77: 71×343(73)×385(71)×2401(74)×77777(71)7^1 \times 343 (7^3) \times 385 (7^1) \times 2401 (7^4) \times 77777 (7^1) gives v7=10v_7 = 10; hence n=min⁡(4,10)=4n = \min(4, 10) = 4.
