UPSC Prelims 2025 CSAT, question 27

Topic: Number system

Q27

Let both pp and kk be prime numbers such that (p2+k)(p^2+k) is also a prime number less than 30. What is the number of possible values of kk ?

  1. (a) 4
  2. (b) 5Correct answer
  3. (c) 6
  4. (d) 7

Solution.

Answer: (b) 5

  1. Since pp is prime and p2+k<30p^2 + k < 30 with k≥2k \ge 2, pp can only be 2,3,2, 3, or 55 (p2∈{4,9,25}p^2 \in \{4, 9, 25\}).
  2. For p=2p = 2, 4+k4 + k is a prime <30< 30 when k∈{3,7,13,19}k \in \{3, 7, 13, 19\} (giving primes 7,11,17,237, 11, 17, 23; note k=25k = 25 is not prime).
  3. For p=3p = 3, 9+k9 + k is prime only when k=2k = 2 (giving 1111, since for odd kk, 9+k9 + k is even); for p=5p = 5, 25+k<3025 + k < 30 allows k∈{2,3}k \in \{2, 3\}, giving 2727 and 2828 (neither prime). Thus k∈{2,3,7,13,19}k \in \{2, 3, 7, 13, 19\}, giving 55 possible values.

Trap: Do not include k=25k = 25 for p=2p = 2 (4+25=294 + 25 = 29 is prime, but k=25k = 25 is composite).
