UPSC Prelims 2025 CSAT, question 25

Topic: Number system

Q25

Consider the first 100 natural numbers. How many of them are not divisible by any one of 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 ?

  1. (a) 20
  2. (b) 21
  3. (c) 22Correct answer
  4. (d) 23

Solution.

Answer: (c) 22

  1. Since 99 is a multiple of 33, a number is not divisible by any of 2,3,5,7,2, 3, 5, 7, and 99 if and only if it is not divisible by any of the four primes 2,3,5,2, 3, 5, and 77.
  2. Every composite number ≤100\le 100 has a prime factor ≤100=10\le \sqrt{100} = 10, which must be 2,3,5,2, 3, 5, or 77; therefore, the surviving numbers are 11 together with all prime numbers between 1111 and 100100.
  3. There are 2525 primes up to 100100; excluding the 44 primes (2,3,5,7)(2, 3, 5, 7) leaves 2121 primes, and adding the number 11 gives 21+1=2221 + 1 = 22 numbers.

Trap: Remember to include the number 11 (which is not divisible by 2,3,5,2, 3, 5, or 77), shifting the count from 2121 to 2222.
