UPSC Prelims 2025 CSAT, question 19

Topic: Logical reasoning

Q19

Consider the following statements :

I. If A≤B>C<D>E>F≥G=HA \le B>C<D>E>F \ge G=H; then BB is always greater than EE.

II. If P>Q=R≥S=T≤U=V>WP>Q=R \ge S=T \le U=V>W; then SS is always less than VV.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

  1. (a) I only
  2. (b) II only
  3. (c) Both I and II
  4. (d) Neither I nor IICorrect answer

Solution.

Answer: (d) Neither I nor II

  1. Statement I is incorrect: in A≤B>C<D>EA \le B > C < D > E, the reversal of inequality signs at B>C<DB > C < D prevents any definite comparison between BB and EE (for example, B=5,C=1,D=10,E=8B = 5, C = 1, D = 10, E = 8 gives B<EB < E).
  2. Statement II is incorrect: in S=T≤U=VS = T \le U = V, we have S≤VS \le V, which allows S=VS = V when T=UT = U, so SS is not always strictly less than VV.
