Q69

The volume of a cube is 8 cm38\text{ cm}^{3} and is equal to the volume of a cuboid of length xx, breadth yy and height zz, where x,yx,y and zz are natural numbers (x>y>z)(x>y>z). Let nn be the number of such cuboids with different dimensions. What is the value of nn ?

  1. (a) 11Correct answer
  2. (b) 22
  3. (c) 33
  4. (d) More than 3

Solution.

Answer: (a) 11

  1. Since xyz=8xyz = 8 and x>y>zx > y > z are positive integers, z cannot be at least 2: that would force xyz≥4×3×2=24xyz \geq 4 \times 3 \times 2 = 24.
  2. Hence z=1z = 1.
  3. Now xy=8xy = 8 with x>y>1x > y > 1.
  4. Only (x,y)=(4,2)(x,y) = (4,2) works; (8, 1) repeats 1 and violates the strict inequalities.
