Q47

Let xx be the length of a diagonal of a face of a cube and yy be the length of a diagonal of the cube. If x+y=(5+26)x+y=(5+2\sqrt{6}) units, then what is the total surface area of the cube ?

  1. (a) 6(x+y)6(x+y)Correct answer
  2. (b) 6xy6xy
  3. (c) 3(x+y)3(x+y)
  4. (d) 3xy3xy

Solution.

Answer: (a) 6(x+y)6(x+y)

  1. If the cube edge is a, then x=a2x = a\sqrt{2} and y=a3y = a\sqrt{3}.
  2. Also 5+26=(2+3)25 + 2\sqrt{6} = \left( \sqrt{2} + \sqrt{3} \right)^{2}.
  3. Therefore a(2+3)=(2+3)2a\left( \sqrt{2} + \sqrt{3} \right) = \left( \sqrt{2} + \sqrt{3} \right)^{2}, giving a=2+3a = \sqrt{2} + \sqrt{3} and a2=5+26=x+ya^{2} = 5 + 2\sqrt{6} = x + y.
  4. Total surface area =6a2=6(x+y)= 6a^{2} = 6(x + y).
