In the following items a pair of sentences (S1, S2) is given. Select the most appropriate and relevant co-relationship of the second sentence to the first from among the options (a), (b), (c) and (d), and mark your response on the Answer Sheet accordingly.

Q97

S1 : Many hands make light work.

S2 : Too many cooks spoil the broth.

The second sentence :

  1. (a) contradicts the assertion of the firstCorrect answer
  2. (b) contrasts the assertion of the first
  3. (c) confirms the assertion of the first
  4. (d) qualifies the assertion of the first

Solution.

Answer: (a) contradicts the assertion of the first

  1. S1 says that when many people share a task, the work becomes easy.
  2. S2 says that when too many people handle a task, they spoil it.
  3. One proverb praises more helpers and the other warns against them, so S2 opposes S1.

Trap: (d) qualifies looks tempting because S2 says too many rather than many, but the two proverbs are a standard pair of opposites.
